How I Clean My Makeup Brushes

No one likes to clean their makeup brushes. It’s messy, it takes too long, it’s boring.. no one likes it. In the past I would put a little soap in the palm of my hand and swirl the brush around, this took absolutely forever, and my hand looked like a legit prune afterwards. I kept seeing the Sigma Brushing Cleaning Mat ($32/Cdn) and thought it was a great idea, but why would anyone pay $32 for a rubber mat.. Then I saw girls making their own online, and I saw others raving about dupes they found at Ikea or the Dollarama.

I am a huge Dollarama fan, you can find literally anything there, so I decided to scope mine out and find my own dupe of the Sigma mat. That’s when I stumbled across this:

It’s a rubber trivet to put hot pots and pans on, but let me tell you, it works great as a brush cleaner. It cost me $2/Cdn, and I think it’s the greatest thing to ever happen to my makeup brushes. It has little 1/2 centimetre divots, that get in between the bristles and clean out the makeup.

I start by putting a dot of Dawn dish detergent (if it’s good enough for the ducks who were caught in oil on the Dawn commercials, it’s good enough for my brushes) on the brush, add some warm water, and swirl it around on the mat. Within seconds, the makeup comes rushing out, and you’re left with a clean brush!

This mat makes my brushes SO much cleaner than my old technique, and it worked on everything from powder brushes, to my gel eyeliner brush, to my foundation brush! And the best part is, once I’m done, I just place the mat in the dish washer and it comes out 100% clean.

Have you tried a mat for cleaning your brushes? Whats your go-to technique?

I’m just winging it. My life, my eyeliner, everything!
