Hey friends, happy Monday! Today’s review is a pretty interesting one (at least to me?!). I’ve seen mascara primers for years and always been interested in testing one out. What was holding me back? Honestly? The cost. It’s just a (typically) white mascara under your regular mascara. Couldn’t I add a few extra coats of my mascara to achieve a more voluminous effect? I was so excited when Influenster sent me the Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Primer and Mascara; now I could finally put a primer to the test!
This package came with both the Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Primer and the Marc Jacobs Beauty Noir Major Volume Mascara, both retail for $33/Cdn. The primer is intended to provide a conditioning base that will make your lashes look like falsies. It goes on your lashes as a soft beige colour, perfect for making sure every lash is coated. I felt it best to wait a few seconds in between this and the black mascara to ensure I wasn’t brushing any of the beige
The mascara has a really great, fat, thick brush. I love brushes like this as I feel they really plump up my lashes, adding length and volume. It’s a nice dark black and didn’t flake off or smudge below my eyes during the day. The brush also did a great job at separating so things weren’t too clumpy.
Final thoughts! The Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Primer didn’t quite live up to the hype I had given primers in my mind. I was hoping that it would add extreme length and crazy volume that looked like false lashes. But really, it just looked like my regular lashes. The Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara was really nice, but I think you could buy without the primer. It definitely competes with my favourite L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara. But the only difference is, the MJ is $33, vs. the L’Oreal is $16. My recommendation would have to be: skip the primer, but try out the mascara if you’re in the market for something new.
I’m just winging it. My life, my eyeliner, everything!
