Tarte Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation: Review

I’m actually really excited to write this foundation review, but for a bit of a twist reason.. A few weeks ago I talked about the AMAZING deal I got on, of a 7-piece set for $85/Cdn. One of the products I chose in my set was the Tarte Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation (I’m in the shade Light-Medium Honey), and I was really excited to try it, as I’ve been loving the Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation.

First off, the packaging on this foundation is gorgeous. It comes in a frosted glass jar with a gold, mirrored cap on top. It’s pretty enough that you’d want to keep it out on your makeup table.

This foundation is super hydrating and blendable, it went on my skin nicely. I really like to use it with my Tarte Buffer Foundation brush, or IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Flat Top Buffing Foundation Brush #6. It’s a gel foundation, which is great for girls with dry skin, as gel foundations are water based and oil-free. This foundation promises to be full coverage, and it is, however, it also claims to be pore-less, which I don’t agree with.

The first time I wore this foundation out, I felt oily almost immediately, then I got stuck in the rain and my whole face fell off (it’s 100% not waterproof!). The second time I wore it to work, my co-worker offered me a blotting paper. I was seriously confused as I don’t typically have oily skin, I’m more combination, and can get a little shiny in the afternoon, but nothing too serious. I decided I would just use this foundation for running errands, and nothing too important.

Then I stumbled upon the NYX Matte Makeup Setting Spray on sale at Shoppers Drug Mart for $8.99. I decided to give the Tarte Gel Foundation one more chance. I wore it to work with the NYX Spray ontop, and it lasted the entire day without needing to blot! I’ve tried it many more times, and felt great all day long. This spray is seriously amazing, everyone needs to try it!!
Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 11.09.26 PMAll in all, the Tarte Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation ($51/Cdn) isn’t the right foundation for me, but I’m really excited that I was able to test out the NYX Setting Spray and see that it is an amazing product that can help stop oils. If you’re looking for a hydrating foundation and have dry skin, the Tarte Gel Foundation is for you. If you need some help staying matte all day long, the NYX Matte Makeup Setting Spray is for you.

Have you tried either of these products? What’s your go-to product for managing oily skin?

I’m just winging it. My life, my eyeliner, everything!
