If you know anything about me, you know I’m obsessed with mermaids my entire life!! I would watch the Little Mermaid on repeat, I have like 10 different Ariel ornaments for my Christmas tree, and my bathroom has a ocean/mermaid theme to it (yes, I am a grown up). I just love them so much!! When it was announced that a Mermaid School would be coming to Toronto about a year ago, I had so many people tag me on Facebook articles, and I knew I had to check it out one day!
The AquaMermaid team invited me and a friend to try out their hour long Mermaid Swim Class today, and it was a blast! We started by picking out our tails, then we hopped in the pool to pick out our mermaid names.. I, naturally, went with Princess Seashell. Swimming with the tail on was honestly harder than I thought it would be. They mentioned that once the tail gets wet, it adds about 30 lbs extra to your body, and it was hard to lift the tail out of the water. We learned how to swim on both our stomachs and backs, maneuvering your hips and legs in a propelling motion. We also learned how to stay afloat, front flip and back flip, and we even created a mermaid swimming routine with a partner.
The teacher was really sweet and I could tell she loved teaching how to swim like Ariel to new mermaids. My only negative thought would be around the facility. The class was hosted at the University Settlement Community Pool, and it was really run down and dated. All in all, the class was really fun, but was also challenging and a fun and different workout for me!
You can book classes online at aquamermaid.com for $60/per mermaid.
